The project “4096 cm3”is the results of the dialogue that emerged between an architect, a designer and an artist when spending a month of residency in the facili- ties of OCT (oficinas da ceramica e terra), the artisanal brick factory of Montemor-o-novo in Alentejo, PT.
4096 cm3 is the quantity of matter (clay, water and sand) that is required to fill the mold of a tijolo burro, a traditional brick produced by OCT. Using the volume of this brick a new modular element emerged, aiming to bring the brick into domestic sphere.
The stacking as logic of assembly and the modularity, inherent to the brick, were used to reach a variety of shapes capable of suggesting a purpose, without stating a specific function. Led by the desire to reach volumes capable to foster an ambiguity between furniture, con- struction material and sculpture, the project wants to approach the possibility of a form’s “degree zero”.
The dialogue with the site of production and its actors conceptually as well as technically dictated the evolu- tion of the project. Sleeping stack of bricks, racks and production tools, defined a sculptural vocabulary that continually fed this dialogue. The stacking system tradi- tionally used to dispose brick and ceramics in the Kiln directly inspired the logic of assembly used to organize the elements with each other.
Ceramics bends, crack and deforms when drying. By embracing and exceeding the method of artisanal brick making used in OCT, the project wants to challenge the clay’s properties, operating at the limit of the material, in close relation with the local expertise.
