Esta oficina tem como base ensinar a compreender os fundamentos do funcionamento de uma máquina de CNC, através da utilização de um router de 3 eixos. Ao longo de dois dias imersivos, os participantes irão estar em contato com os aspectos teóricos da tecnologia CNC e irão meter em prática o que aprenderam, realizando os seus seus próprios projectos numa pequena escala.

This hands-on workshop aims to equip participants with a fundamental understanding and practical experience in CNC machining, focusing on the use of a 3-axis router. Over two immersive days, attendees will journey from the theoretical aspects of CNC technology to the completion of their own small-scale projects.

Day 1: Theoretical Foundations and Machine Familiarization The first day is dedicated to building a solid theoretical foundation in CNC machining. Participants will start with an introduction to CNC technology and safety protocols, followed by an in-depth look at the specific 3-axis router used in the workshop. The session will cover materials and tools suitable for CNC routing, design principles for CNC, and an overview of CAD/CAM software for converting designs into machine-ready formats. The day concludes with a Q&A session, setting the stage for the next day’s practical work.

Day 2: Practical Application and Project Completion The second day is all about hands-on experience. Participants will apply their learned knowledge to real-world projects, starting with machine setup and calibration. Under expert guidance, each participant will get one hour of hands-on machine time, allowing them to bring their designs to life. The workshop concludes with a project showcase, encouraging participants to share their work, discuss challenges, and exchange feedback.

Outcome: Attendees will leave with a comprehensive understanding of CNC machining principles, practical experience in operating a 3-axis router, and their own crafted piece. The workshop fosters a supportive learning environment, emphasizing safety, creativity, and the joy of making.

Mihai Chitu’s – Growing up in a world filled with multimeters, waveform generators, and oscilloscopes, Mihai Chiţu’s passion for electronics and automation was sparked early by his father’s expertise in industrial automation and a home lab that served as a playground for invention. This early exposure laid the groundwork for a lifelong fascination with automated machines that seem to operate with a mind of their own. The dream of building a personal 3-axis CNC router began with scavenging components from discarded electronics, although early ambitions were tempered by the high costs and scarcity of control boards.

The participants would need to have a basic knowledge of some vector graphics software, and would be highly recommended to have some DIY / tool shop experience (or enough enthusiasm and determination), also to have a general awareness about the safety rules about working with power tools. Safety will be one of the first topics to address in the workshop, but it’s good to have a base to build upon.

It would  be useful if the participants can share some thoughts beforehand, what DIY/tool shop/makerspace  experience they have, if there is a specific aspect of CNC machining that they want to learn, or an object that they would like to make.
